Dyno Catastrophe: Watch This Diesel Truck Explode And Burn At The Ultimate Callout Challenge5/8/2019 This is literally as bad as it gets. You are going to see the monstrously powerful DRD Diesel built pickup truck on the chassis dyno at the Ultimate Callout Challenge event in Indiana suffer a simply incredible failure and fire. The event, known as UCC is the hardest core, most ragged edge diesel triathlon in the world. The trucks that come here are purpose built for the contest, produce (on average) more than 2,000hp, and have to drag race, dyno, and sled pull over the course of the gathering to see who’s got the best truck. In an industry where bragging rights are a big deal, a strong showing at UCC can launch a shop into the national spotlight. This pull starts out pretty normally but quickly devolves from there. As we hear one guy tell us in the video after this disaster, it is believed to have been a turbocharger failure that kicked off the whole mess. What happened in the aftermath of that took this from expensive and bad to downright horrifying. The debris from the exploding turbocharger wreaked so much havoc that the engine ran away, running at absolute wide open on its own oil and no one had any way to shut it off. You’ll see fire extinguishers coming from all corners and hammering the fire but they were powerless to stop this one. No one was hurt. The driver was wearing a fire suit for the dyno pull (per the rules) and it did its job. Stuff goes bad on the dyno regularly…stuff goes this bad on the dyno very rarely. There’s nothing better than problem solving, especially when the end result is better engineered products that outperform the things that they replace. Companies like Chris Alston’s Chassisworks are in the business of solving problems, making cars work better, and delivering all of that in a high quality and reasonably priced way. If you have been contemplating switching your front brakes over to drag race style units but you don’t want to ditch your stock spindles, boy do we have the fix for you. Chassisworks has a myriad of options to fit drag race brakes on stock spindles. We’re talking: Camaro, Chevelle, Tri-Five Chevy, multiple generations Impala, Mustang II, and multiple generations of Nova as well. Hell, if you call they may have more availability than that as well. On top of the different model fitments they have options for rotor material and more so that you can tailor the parts to your budget and desired end result. The link below will take you to the page that shows all of the applications and you can go from there. Upgrade your brakes and retain your stock spindles. You get the ease of making the brake swap without blowing the front suspension completely apart, and the increased performance of modern stoppers. More here – Check out the stock spindle drag brake options at Chassisworks.com here! The post Looking For Drag Race Brakes That Work With Your Stock Spindles? Chris Alston’s Chassisworks Has You Covered Ok, for starters, let’s hope it is not the 1980s again because we’d loose loads of awesome technology and performance, but the question in the title is valid. Why? If you dig motorcycles than you know that the 1980s were the hot decade for turbocharged factory Japanese bikes arriving on our shores promising loads of power and efficiency. For their time, several of them made scary power, but they did not exactly have the reliability or longevity that any motorcycle buyer or rider expects out of today’s stuff. In many ways, the 1980s turbocharger boom left as quickly as it came and things settled out. Over the last few years, bikes like the monstrous H2 with its supercharger have gotten the “factory boosted” bike discussions started again and it seems Yamaha is not wanting to wait by the wayside any longer as they have filed for Japanese patents that show a turbocharged parallel twin engine being boosted in at least two different layouts. The motorcycle industry as a whole is struggling hard and no one can really put their finger on exactly why but in our opinion, technology like this and machines like the one proposed in the paperwork that Cycle World reported on can start to help the healing process. This is the type of stuff that modern performance enthusiasts want and will pay for. Plus a legit rival for the H2 will be awesome to see emerge. RacingJunk: This Ford Is Rough And (Almost) Ready To Hook Up To The Sled Again Just Add Power5/8/2019 Now this is BangShifty goodness! You are looking at a 1972 Ford truck that is set up to be a super stock class style pulling combatant. The truck has been beefed up in the suspension and frame, the cab has been stripped of all but the bare essentials, and its actually a pretty clean rig for something that seems to have lived its whole life in the New England region where it is currently being sold out of. We love the lettering on the back of the bed that reads, “Thank the Lord for the big block Ford”. We have to guess that this bad boy had at least 514ci of big Ford engine and likely 600+. This tough looking SOB with a screaming big block in it straining against the sled. That’s good stuff! This truck has an asking price of $6,000 and for what’s coming here, we think that is pretty stout. Complete minus the engine and transmission, you are talking a reasonably stout driveline, all the weight hangers front and rear, fuel tank, clean cab, and decent tires. If one wanted they could “undo” the pulling modifications but we’re not sure that would be worth all the effort. Trucks and vehicles like this one trip our trigger because these are the good and reasonable ways to get into motorsports, right? The roller needs and engine and transmission you can stuff together and after that the world’s your oyster. It is the sound of fun, really. Go karts, dirt bikes, and weird homebuilt creations that use elements of both vehicles to become something dangerous, fast, and awesome. Outside of the sound of the engine there’s also a huge groundswell these days for vintage dirt bikes and stuff. They have always been popular as pit bikes and vehicles to beat around on but now guys are really, really passionate in collecting and restoring them. Case in point, this 1978 Kawasaki KE100 ended up in the Hagerty shop to have its little one cylinder two-stroke engine revived. We’re guessing that after 40 years of use the thing had gotten pretty tired and worn out. Watching the little engine come apart is cool in and of itself but when you see how badly scuffed and basically used up the piston was, you know that this rebuild was necessary. We have showed you a lot of these Redline Rebuilds before and we were surprised that we missed this one when it came out. Piston engines, be they big blocks, and or one lungers like this one, fascinate us. It’s fun to see them pulled down and it is doubly fun to see them rebuilt and then to hear the finished product is great. Big fun in a little package here! The car we wanted for (close to) the price we wanted to pay for it. It’s exciting and exhilarating to go and see this thing that’s been the object of your desire, right? Then you get there and the little red flags start popping up. Things that were not mentioned in the ad, things that just do not look right, and things that did not make their way into the supplied photos, either. At that point, the program cuts one of two ways. You either forge ahead and mike a grand mistake by forgetting the problems the vehicle has or your cut bait and go home deflated. You are going to see this exact scene play out here as Tony DeFeo goes to meet a guy about a Duster and from the beginning, things do not exactly stack up as they should. NOW, we should be 100% clear, the dude selling this car is not the bad guy here. He’s a guy with a Duster that he knows a little about but not the complete history or anything like that. We’re pretty sure that the guy in the video got as much of an education as Tony could deal out on the nuances of A-bodies. In the end, there are some great lessons to be learned here and the most basic one is that you have to get off your keister and go look at stuff in person, preferably with a person who knows the stuff up down and sideways. This is an interesting look at a scene we have all lived through before. This was a race car that debuted in 1984 and was still wining international races more than 10 years later. An evolution of the famed 956, the 962 was longer, badder, faster, and generally mo’ bettah than its predecessors. The car was primarily intended to be raced in the IMSA GTP series and that is exactly where we find ourselves. More specifically we find ourselves riding with Jim Busby in a Porsche 962 at Riverside, California circa 1985. Both Jim and the race track have loads of history but Jim’s still with us and the track is not. Sadly the racing facility that played host to so many epic events over the year from NASCAR to IMSA, to off-road trucks was long ago flattened for a shopping center or some such nonsense. Jim Busby is still going strong though. Busby has had an amazing career in motorsports dating back decades to when he showed up at the NHRA Winternationals in a twin engined slingshot that used Ford Indy engines on nitro for power. It made one pass and the rest was history but he has competed at the highest levels in the the road racing world as well, as evidenced by this video. You are going to see him driving, wrestling, and manhandling this 600hp beauty through the famed esses, down the long straight, and through the many undulations of the Riverside course. IMSA racing was fascinating in the 1980s. It was glamorous and when the wheels feel off the series it ended about as quickly as it came. Remember the joke for what IMSA stood for? The International Marijuana Smugglers Association! There were shenanigans in all of motorsports back int he 1980s and IMSA was not immune, for sure. You’ll love this video and boy would we like a few minutes in the seat of a 962…not that we could drive it like Jim but we just want to hear that twin turbocharged flat six scream! It more or less looked like the pictured vehicle, though it wasn’t as bashed; it had the 4G64 four-banger and a five-speed, and as long as I was at work, it was my truck. This would have been around 1997-98, because I had just acquired the 1978 Impala, but hadn’t found the 1979 Caprice that was supposed to be the “parts car” I needed at the time. What do I remember about the little Ram 50? It worked like a mule. I’d spend days cutting up logs and splitting wood, and when I had a bed full I’d have to run them to the woodpile drop-off point and get back to my chainsaw, a drive of about a half-mile. It was easy to operate, simple to use, and was a bucket of fun to beat around on the gravel roads at the site. Often, I’d get warned to quit hauling ass in the little truck. Today’s Question of the Day is an honest reflection of sorts: do you need power to enjoy the experience behind the wheel? I’ll go on the record right now and say no…but my background in underpowered disco barges is clean and clear. After testing my luck in the Hellcat Redeye a couple of days ago, I can say that having that kind of horsepower on tap should come with a Surgeon General’s Warning on the door jamb. But I’ve had just as much fun, if not more, in a beat-up Chevy LUV that was getting thrashed like a rental with the full walk-away insurance plan in place. Some small cars earn a place at the table for a fun factor. Small little cars that handle well, are comfortable, and have a real manual transmission are an addiction of mine, a guilty pleasure. My roommate’s Saturn SC three-door coupe got used often because I liked the peaky power and the five-speed. The fuel economy wasn’t bad either! So be honest with yourself for a moment: tons of power is always nice to have, but it isn’t everything. There are other ways to enjoy a good drive, so do you really need an atomic bomb at the tip of the throttle? And what is your recipe of choice? (Photos by Cole Reynolds) We were at Holley’s LSFest West in Las Vegas all weekend long and are trying to recover from sensory overload now that we’re back home. With drifting, off-road racing, autocross, 3S, road course, drag racing, several shootouts and the Sac Speed Shop Sideshow going on all weekend at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, it was non-stop tire smoke, noise, and fun. This event has a totally different personality and flare to it than LSFest in Bowling Green, which is cool because it makes them both unique. We have been a part of the LSFest family since its inception and seeing LSFest West growing at such a rapid rate is something that makes us feel great about these events. While I was out and about announcing all that is LSFest, Cole was out shooting photos like a mad man. This year there were some big changes with a much much larger Sideshow pit, much bigger drift courses, and an overall layout that had spectators, racers, and fans immersed in all the action. When you combine the awesome LVMS staff to the mix, including awesome shuttle drivers who were making laps all weekend, it was an atmosphere that had racers, fans, and family all having a great time together. This is the kind of even that really is a party, which is what it should be when you are celebrating everything LS related. We have to thank all the racers who came out to, as we had record numbers of entries in every single category this year. And the spectator parking lot was PACKED! This will be an LSFest West to remember, that’s for sure, and we are already excited about next year.
